Camera Critters: Cow Love

I am pretty sure this is mother and child. The mother rested her head on her child's head. More photos of these and others in the herd can be found here. I want to thank Rambling Round of Selma, Ala. Daily Photo with her help in identifying the breed of cattle as "Black Baldy, which is either a SimmentalXAngus or HerefordXAngus. The others could be HerefordXSimmental or simply Simmental."
Thank you so much for visiting!

  7. Lots of cattle in the farm country north of New Orleans, across Lake Ponchartrain. I call cows "mooglers" for reasons that my middle-aged brain cannot reconstruct -:)

  8. OK, my friend... here's the deal - I have ALWAYS been one of your #1 fans - I have ALWAYS loved your photography. But, right now, I am very sick and you still managed to get me to squeal out loud in delight. I LOVE this! Yes, of course, it's probably because we have a beef cattle farm... and because this would go perfect in my cow-themed kitchen or living room. You, my friend, are an awesome photographer.

I've managed to get similar shots as this with sheep and lambs, but not with cattle... yet ;-) You've just given me a challenge.

I may have asked you before, but I don't remember. What kind of camera do you use, and do you leave your photos untouched or do you PhotoShop them?

OK, the 'long comment police' are here telling me I better end this comment or else ;-)

  9. Oh Misty, you make me blush in pride! I just eat this up! I have a Kodak Z710 Zoom. Only a bit of zoom on this. I used iPhoto only on this shot: crop (for symmetry, I die without symmetry) and I darkened it a bit because the sun was so bright and despite my camera settings, there was not enough color. It could still use more but then I lose the detail in the black fur (hair?). I'm fascinated by you raising beef cattle. Do you agree with Rambling Round's description of the breed?

Thank you again, Misty. Now lie down, sleep and behave, OK? I am going to bask in the warmth of your comment.

  10. I don't normally think of cows as affectionate as I might dogs or even cats, so this is an even more powerful photo as showing the unexpected. Then again, I'm amazed at the affection with which many of the farmers speak of their cows. In any case, this photo is a beauty.

  27. Cows do make great photo subjects. Nice shot. As for my lizard Camera Critter, I'm not sure, but I have seen the lizards flashing their underside blue coloring to other lizards. It's either a mating thing or territorial thing. Either way, it makes a great photo.
