Overheard : Is This What You Meant?

Overheard at my wedding:
An out of state guest complained that her high-heeled sandaled feet were getting dirty "like the Vermont people's feet." I looked around. The Vermonters at the wedding wore flip flops or were barefoot. The out of state guests wore shoes or expensive sandals.

Above is a photo of little Ironman's feet after an evening at the beach at Crystal Lake (where the wedding was held). He was so happy with his dirty feet that he asked me to photograph them! So I did.

I wonder if this is the "dirty" that my guest was talking about?

Updates and Overheard

I can confidently say that my doe has taken her fawn(s) across the road, out of the beaver meadows, and up the mountain. We have not seen them for almost a week now. It is a big relief!

The white moth photograph from the Fourth of July was identified as a white spring moth today at bugguide.net.

The stilt walkers that were injured in the Fourth of July parade were thankfully only bruised. They were treated and released at the hospital that day.

The house fire in Orleans for which the fire trucks and crews had to abruptly leave the parade was not an awful fire. It was bad enough but mostly the damage was from smoke.

The Barton Chronicle quoted the fire chiefs, who met after the Barton parade, as describing the parade as "the parade from hell."

Orleans Teenager Accused Of High-Speed Flight

Orleans Teenager Accused Of High-Speed Flight

On Friday I twittered about this high speed chase that went by the house. A red car closely followed by an unmarked state car, then by two state troopers, then a sheriff, then more troopers. Later, another trooper raced by but turned around down near my neighbors and raced back to Westmore.

At Currier's that afternoon we learned that it was "only a kid." Here are the details.

Overheard and Overeaten

The reason there were so many state troopers and sheriffs in town yesterday was because they caught some nefarious drug dealers in the area of the yarn store (which is exactly where I was pulled over yesterday). I also heard that there were drug-sniffing dogs working around there.

The old Jennie Bean's restaurant is now The Parson's Corner (because it used to be the parsonage) and is opening tomorrow morning at 5 AM. That's good. Now I can eat in town again and not in Coventry. Martha's Diner is wonderful but is too far away. And the Busy Bee in Glover has new owners and is closed for renovations. I just hope this new place in Barton is as good as Jennie's. I wonder who they will hire and I hope it is the women who used to work there. I heard that the owners are most likely from New York because of the amount of money they are spending trying to make the place look "New Englandy." The sign says "Hearty New England Dining" or "Food" or something. I'll go this weekend (they close on Tuesdays of all days) and let you know how they are.

These things were overheard and discussed thoroughly at the Mother-Daughter Banquet in Barton tonight. Amy made a devil's food cake with a white frosting. She bakes from scratch and her cakes always go first. But tonight I snuck out with her cake while it still had three pieces left. Catherine was pretty upset about that, I heard. Amy told Catherine to come to the house and wrestle me for a piece. Entertainment tonight was a lady magician from Littleton. She was very good and I sat close enough to see how a couple of her tricks worked.

Statcounter told me that somebody at my mortgage company was on my recipe blog last week. I got totally paranoid thinking they had searched me out. But then I looked at where they came from: Google: a search for "chocolate lava cake." They looked at the King Arthur recipe I have there!

Phone message: the soup/bread class at King Arthur's on Saturday was cancelled because only two signed up. That's pretty disappointing. But at least now I will get my $80 back and I need it badly!

Overheard Today

The Missisquoi River this morning.

The people who tell the state people what the real weather is going to be called the road supervisors yesterday or today. They said to be very prepared for the nor'easter that is coming Sunday night through Monday. It will be hurricane force winds and three to four feet snow. It is going to be affecting all of New England very badly. We will be on the cold side of the storm, not the warm side as predicted so far.

This has credence because we all know that road supervisors get more information than we get. That is why the graders clear the sides of the roads the day before a heavier than predicted snowfall. Also, the TV and radio weather people have hinting that the storm could be colder than they think it will be.

I heard this from T who heard it from L who heard it from B who heard it from the road supervisor.
