Blogged by Flickr

On June 10th, Flickr blogged this photo of mine taken inside the Dog Chapel at Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury. You can read the Flickr Blog Post here. I was wondering what happened on that day because this photo received 20 favorites (on that day) and my Flickr account received 1,353 hits. Many other of the Dog Mountain photos were favorited, also. I went to my Flickr Stats page (even though I have linked to my stats page, I am not certain you can see it if you click) and clicked on the domain with the most referrals and found the pleasant cause of all of this activity. Thank you, Flickr!

St. Johnsbury Excursion Train

While Amelia worked, Matt and I enjoyed the St. Johnsbury-Lyndonville excursion train as part of St. Johnsbury Summerfest. Above, Matt hangs out a window near the Passumpsic River.

There were two engines — one in front and one in back. This is looking at the back of the back engine (which became the front engine when we returned from Lyndonville) as seen through the door of the car we were riding in.

The car we rode in (it was empty except for us) as we traveled to Lyndonville.

Choo Choo the Clown entertained the kids. This family had moved into "our car" on the return ride. Apparantly their youngster did not like the train ride and cried all the way back. Which was why Matt and I had chosen to ride in the empty car. The other cars were full of noisy kids. The kids' noise and the diesel fumes gave me quite the headache that afternoon. (Yes, I love kids. I am a teacher. But hearing crying for an hour is distressing for anybody.) The little guy finally relaxed at the end of the trip and we all had a good time.

Vermont Life Reviews Our Restaurants

Goldie's Gathering, Cabot:
Across from Town Hall and next door to the hardware store — a perfect location for this new local favorite. Chefs Scott St. John — who also cooks at the Cabot K-12 school — and Brian Rossell — a local boy and New England Culinary Institute grad — supply the eats that keep the regulars happy. From pancakes at breakfast to stuffed filet of sole at dinner, Goldie's dishes it out and draws them in.

Elements, St. Johnsbury:
Located in an old wood-working mill on the Passumpsic River, this dining spot offers what chef and co-owner Florence Chamberlin calls "modern-American" cuisine, with a heavy emphasis on local production: cheeses from Jasper Hill Farm, mushrooms from celebrity foragers Nova Kim and Les Hook, homemade breads, pies and ice creams. Attentive waitstaff may even entertain your children while you enjoy the signature smoked trout cakes.

The Parson's Corner, Barton:
Enjoy bacon and eggs, burgers, and sandwiches in an 1867 parsonage. Lunch dishes of "hearty New England fare" are on tap: turkey dinner, Yankee pot roast, baked beans, clam chowder and — yum! — chicken potpie. My review: great food but the service could be vastly improved. I always leave well-fed but very irritated.

The Parker Pie Co., West Glover;
This tiny eatery in the back of the Lake Parker Country Store offers thin-crust, "artisan" pizza, Vermont brews, calzones, salads, killer dessert pies, and a clientele that could be auditioning for a remake of "Hair." My review: just the perfect place to go on Friday night. But I want to go on Wednesday night when it is Pasta Night (if they still have it!). As for "clientele . . . Hair"? I'm tired of these depictions . . . shame on Vermont Life.

Dogs on Thursday: Sophie on Dog Mountain

Amy takes her dogs to Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury. This is a free, 300 acre dog park created by artist Stephen Huneck. There is the mountain, fields, forest, ponds, a dog chapel and a store that sells Huneck's art.

Sophie saw me while she was drinking in the pond and immediately began to swim to me. The further she swam, the more horrified she looked. But she made it safely to me and drenched me in water when she shook off.  Sophie is the baddest dog, yet my favorite. She is so full of life and love.

You can see the entire photowalk in my Flickr set here, or in my web gallery, here.

All photos open large in new window.
Thank you for visiting, and happy DOT!

We Have Color

View from Dog Mountain, St. Johnsbury

Our color looked like this a couple of days ago but I think it's gone. It's hard to tell because it is pouring rain and I am all fogged in. I took this photo in St. Johnsbury where it has been much warmer and is further south than me. I never got a good photograph of our color. So this will have to be my "fall foliage" shot for this year. And the shot's not too good because the sky was overcast all day. This photo looks great when you click on it.

Kham's Thai Cuisine

Amy took me to my first Thai restaurant yesterday in St. Jay. It was OK. The best part was being with Amy. I can survive without Thai food. It seemed to be fancy Chinese food to me. With pineapple, salt and peanuts. I just don't understand the fascination with it. The Ethiopian food when we were in Washington I can also live without. Now Indian food I am willing to explore. I had some last summer that was terrific.

Next weekend the Freight House Restaurant in Lyndonville (already the site of one date I thought was wonderful but wasn't!) is having a St. Patrick's Day dinner from 11am-8pm. I wonder if I can find a date to go. Dating is not all that fun. I don't like being lied to. That seems to be the big problem: lying and misrepresentation. Since I began my quest last year for a lifelong love, I have been lied to and promised things by EVERY man. What's up with the truth anymore? Truth doesn't scare me. Lies scare the shit out of me.

Otherwise the weekend is lousy. It is in the thirties today but it is cloudy and damp so I cannot open up the porches to the sun. The snow is still too deep to go out in it. It may as well be below zero again.

I got a sauce recipe out of Andrew. I hope it is good because I am desperate for real spaghetti. Not Vermont style! I can order the tomatoes online (click the link to the recipe on Andrew's name. At the recipe, click the Marzano graphic at the top of the post for the importer). And tomorrow I can go back to work and be useful again.

12/30/06: Cliffs on the Mountain

12/30/06: Cliffs on the Mountain
12/30/06: Cliffs on the Mountain,
originally uploaded by meeyauw.
Hawks and bobcats live up there behind my kitchen. You can't see the fine powder that is falling today. But there is no traffic at all going by today. Another "unexpected" event. Sue and I were going to go to St Jay for lunch out today! I really wanted to do that. Now we need to make new plans. And another storm is due in on Monday.

So I am blogging, listening to music, caring for these pesky cats . . . and staying warm! It is cold!

Watch weather reports for Monday storm! Will there be school Tuesday?
