November

Spreading manure on a pasture

There has been no snow. Just a lot of fog, heavy frosts, and sunny days. I haven't needed a winter coat. All of this is so unusual. We usually have a white Halloween and children put ski pants over their costumes in order to stay warm. There used to be parties for kids because it was too cold for them to go door to door for trick or treating for very long. It's all changed now.

Silage is mown and in barns

The farmers, I would guess, have extra time to prepare the pastures for next spring. The fields of corn grown for silage are bare, without even the birds to pick over the leftovers. Manure, in slurry form, is being spread on fields and pastures.

Fuel level today

Personally, I am not using much heating oil at all. The last time I bought fuel was October 20 at $6.65 a gallon. The warmer it stays, the safer I am. No one can afford fuel prices like that. Soon, I will be making a spreadsheet of prices and deliveries from last year to this year.

Also, I don't have to drive on unplowed, iced-over roads in the dark on school days. Despite the damage to the climate, I am grateful. It's daunting in the cold and dark, driving on bad roads for six months.

My Corner of the World: Big Clouds

There were dramatic clouds overhead yesterday, over the bog across the road. They were heading to the south, which means colder weather. I'm not ready to turn on the heat yet! I made a time lapse and GIF of the action overhead. We had about an hour of rumbly thunder but there was no rain. The bog under the clouds is a rich environment where I constantly see beaver, otter, deer, moose and bear. Of course, there are many bird species there also, but they are difficult to see!

My Corner of the World: Good morning

Mist rising off the wetlands

It was 53°F (12°C) at 7 AM this morning and mist rose off of the wetlands. This is my kind of morning, even though there were no insects about yet. I have to say though, that the morning mists usually come much later in August and all through September. I do not want autumn to come early. Visit other corners of the world here:
