Orleans County Quests: Troy River Road Quest (Wingnut Photos)
Big Falls State Park: Sixteen acres, Town of Troy. This site includes the largest undammed cascade and gorge remaining on a major Vermont river. The area includes big old hemlock and white pine trees. The plant life in this Natural Area is diverse and includes several uncommon species. The falls are a popular recreation attraction (swimming, fishing and viewing) as the site is readily accessible from Vermont Route 105. (Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, Lands Administration Division).
Down the road is the The River Road Bridge (also called the Schoolhouse Bridge), built in 1910, which carries Vielleux Road across the Missisquoi River. Lattice work truss.

Heads or Tails: Hoarfrost
The most common form of hoarfrost is called surface hoar. This consists of ice crystals that form on top of snow banks, usually overnight. The sparkles you see coming from a field of snow are often reflections off the facets of surface hoar crystals.
Surface hoar typically forms when a snowbank warms up during the day and is then cooled again overnight. The night air cools the surface of the snowbank more than the inside, so that water can evaporate from inside the snowbank and recrystalize on the surface. By morning the snowbank is covered with a layer of faceted ice crystals, and they can be quite large. These usually melt again once the sun comes up, so the best time to find surface hoar is early in the morning.

No hike (again) this weekend: deer season begins in the morning. I never did get those orange kevlar vests for my herd of deer.

Procrastination Can Be Good
Sometimes I get lucky, as in the photo above.I was supposed to go into work to pack up my classroom and bring home curriculum materials I will need over the summer. But it is not a contractual day so I put it off. I watched the tapes of yesterday's soaps at 9 AM, showered at 11 AM, flickr'ed, blogged: in effect, I did everything I could think of to put it off.
Finally I began to close windows preparing to leave when a huge deer startled me across the road. I got my camera and crept out the door. But I had startled her, also, and she was hiding in the grass:

Finally she lept over the cattails to disappear into the woods. Another perfect shot that I missed. I turned and saw a robin hopping about at the edge of the yard and photographed her, getting the shot above.
I am going to leave now. I think the reason I am going to school is because I want lunch at Paddy's Snack Bar in Troy. A grumpy pair they are, but the pies are great. I also want more photos, especially of the mysterious purple flowers in the beaver meadow. They are probably lupine or loosestrife but they look iris-like in my zoom lens.
I have to get a move on: Wingnut is coming Saturday. So much work and no time left!

Photo Hunters: Hobby

My new hobby: photography. I enjoy playing with effects with different software. While preparing this post I found a new way to make a banner for my blog: using Image Tricks crop and gamma adjustment. In the future, I will finish this banner and use GIMP to make the final size adjustments. For these photos, I used three days of photos of Jay Peak in Vermont taken on April 10, 11 and 12, 2007 in different light and clouds. All photos were taken from the same spot on the road.Under each photo I have sparse notes of the software and perhaps the effect that I used. At the end of this post is a linked list of the software. Each link and each photo link will open a new window. You can also go to my Flickr set that I created to collect this work.
This was great fun for the afternoon that I was snowed in (Thursday afternoon, April 12; we are still having winter here).
Software used:
I can't wait to learn about the hobbies that other people have. Have a great week! I will, I'm going to be on spring break, with or without spring!
