Annual Holiday Portraits

Poppy
Woken from her nap.

Nelly
At the breakfast table.

Lucy
Happy all the time.

I am exhausted after corralling them and editing the photos for the holidays. I have no decorations in the house so after I cropped, I took the images to remove.bg, the best background remover I've seen. It is used by entomologists for their insect photos. They also have backgrounds that I like, both photos and colors with a custom color selector. Christmas is still very difficult for me. I made more bread and I'm glad it's almost over.

Sunday Selfies Personalities

Sweet Betsy

Grumpy Nell

Night after night, I watch these three do their thing. The routine barely changes. Betsy is always happy, Nell is always grumpy, and Lucy loves to watch TV.

I am going to legally change Nell's name from Little Nell to Grumpy Nell. She's actually happy and purrs and wants scritches, but always looks the grump.

But they are all friends and race me to the bedroom at night. That's what counts.

Trying to Keep Up with Life

Cinnamon Monkeying Around Bread
dough going into fridge overnight to rise

Soft outside, buttery and cinnamony outside

There's always school, isn't there; always there are lessons to be honed for the next day. But there are also chores, puzzles to do, reading about pies and maternal boundaries, too much TV to binge, and resting the knees. On top of the usual, I've started my Christmas baking tests. Yesterday I did King Arthur Flour's Monkeying Around Bread. It's a single layer monkey bread made with a simple enriched dough with a cinnamon sugar coating. We are considering baking at school, and this is one recipe for consideration. Each child can make her own batch and take it home.

Nelly loves one of her new toys so much that she managed to push it into a back corner that I could not reach. But Amelia came yesterday and snagged it out so that Nelly is happily back in business.

00:31

Amelia also fixed the garage door openers so I don't have to worry about animals in the garage during the day. The oil tank in the garage is also protected from the wind now. Except a big flower pot fell on the feeding pipe and had to be retrieved—the copper pipe was not damaged.

In particular, these are the animals I want out of the garage:

The Porcupine

This is not the photo I posted earlier this week. It's the same porkie, just another shot. I couldn't decide which of the two shots was best. They were both handheld shots. The wind and rain kept slamming the door on me, so the tripod (which I did get out of the car and into the house) would not have worked. But somehow, on that dark day, I managed to get the settings right for the light and held the camera steady enough for better shots. I can imagine how good they would been with a tripod. The porcupines have been quiet this week and I have only seen one. I will drive up to the trees in a couple days to see if they are okay or not (Lucy has given no indications that one fell out of the tree, so all should be well).

I've missed some awesome shots this week: a manure spreader in a whiteout, a flock of starlings, candid dog and cat shots. Starlings are rare here and I get excited to see them. They may not be native, may even be invasive, but they are so intelligent and beautifully patterned that I enjoy them greatly.

I came home to see Betsy in the new cat tree. I woke her up and got this shot:

Betsy

Even though it has been wicked busy and tiring, these have been happy non-depressed days. Classes have been going well. The little bitty kids and I are learning about snowflakes. We also read a Hanukkah book and played dreidel. My snowflake catcher has arrived from Vermont Snowflakes, so we will capture some and attempt to photograph them. Two other classes are doing rates. One class in a consumer orientation, the other in a pure mathematics orientation. There are only two full weeks of classes left before break. The two weeks are followed by two and a half days of kids frenzied by Christmas (the little ones already are) and all of the activities.

I am truly looking forward to that long break.

A Day at Home

Lucy in the sunshine.

So we were home sick today.
Everyone else is happy about that except me.

The toys I ordered from Chewy came today. Nelly and Betsy both enjoyed the whatchamacallit pretty-green-toy-with-little-balls-in-it. They both looked at but ignored the new tent. In my aloneness-boredom, I ordered the cats a huge cat tree that I cannot possibly assemble myself. I hope it comes this weekend.

The boredom was awful. I missed the kids. The cats slept almost all day. I missed the excitement of school on the last day before a holiday. At least last night was pleasant.

Sweet Betsy

Betsy's almost asleep.

Betsy now comes to bed every night. She bathes and then goes to sleep purring, making sure that I am fingers-distance from her neck for scritches. If I stop, she pushes her neck into my fingers again. Lucy has done the same with my other hand every night for years. I'm pretty busy at bedtime.

All day I tried to upload videos of the cats playing with their new toys, but Google seemed to choke on all of them, long and short. It's probably just as well. They are videos only a mother can love.

The girls are more inspecting each other than their new toy.

I never made the cranberries today as I should have. Or started the dinner rolls as I should have. I'm off to try and be productive; at least for tonight.

Bedtime Cats

Nelly Goes to Bed

I can't even remember what effects I used for today! But they show the different moods of the kitties at bedtime. Nelly is calm and quiet and Betsy is squirmy. I have added 15 minutes to bedtime because of all the extra activity now with Betsy in the family!

Betsy Goes to Bed

The effects give choices for my mood for puzzle solving, also. I'm getting better and better times with regular practice! Have a marvelous weekend!

I Get the Awwws Today. Seriously.

Lucy with her new lamb squeaky
(and her licked out yogurt container)

Yesterday at the grocery store, I lost control and got Lucy a lamb squeaky and a squeaky ball, and I got the cats two new balls. (Can you tell me where the other thousand balls are that I have bought in the past?)

Lucy keeping guard over her can

Lucy has always been a hoarder of stuff. I call her the midden keeper. A midden is where squirrels keep their stuff and their trash. Lucy keeps everything and keeps it all in piles. She's done this since a baby puppy. All of her precious things are in her piles. But I was surprised to see the cat food can in her bowl. Lucy, being a Lab, would eat everything and be overweight, so to prevent her heartbreak  at not having snacks (if you do not share food, you do not love her), I let her lick out anything that is not dangerous for her. So she licks out yogurt containers and cat food cans. There are not enough calories in those to put on any weight plus she is reassured that I still love her and I don't get any heartbroken eyes staring at me. But she put this can in her bowl after I fed her. That tells me that she is a tad anxious about cats stealing from her midden.

The cats are making me a tad anxious, also.

I gave the cats their new balls and they loved them. I heard them jingling all afternoon. I finally finished my work and watched the cats…and found another dead thing! If it weren't for the new balls, I would have never seen it.

Nelly loving her new ball.
I see the dead shrew and turned over table.

They kill every day. Nell gives me her kills, so I don't have to search the house for dead bodies. But Betsy is just dropping them wherever. So now there is the danger of having a stinky dead body in the house that I can't find until it stinks so badly that I can find it easily. Not fun! They knock over that table every day.

The daily knock-over of plants.
And yes, I know I have to re-pot them.

And Betsy (I know it is her) insists on knocking over the plants there on the shelf above. Every. Single. Day. I am moving the plants today. Maybe they will be moved to the trash can.

Oh, yeah.
Betsy found the toilet paper stash.
She can open the cupboard, too.

This used to be such a quiet and calm household.

Sunday Selfies: Funny Faces

Nelly

We all know how serious Nelly is about making biscuits. Every. Night. As soon as I go to bed, Nelly jumps up and gets down to business on her new blanket with her legs moving so fast the camera can't keep up in low lighting. Betsy, who has just started coming to bed with us, finally saw Nelly in action and actually reacted as you see below. It seriously cracked me up!

Betsy, "What's she doing??"

Hoping all have a fun and smiling weekend!

Busy Busy Busy

Nelly's Biscuits

Nelly and Betsy have been very busy. Nelly, nightly, is making biscuits galore and Betsy now works in "my" home office. She's quite the typist. Her help has required me to re-type several pages of text and to reconnect to important chats. During a virtual meeting this week, I think I saw another participant roll his eyes when Betsy strolled by the screen. Again. Obviously, he isn't owned by a cat. I have no control over which meetings these girls attend! In fact, I seem to have no control whatsoever.

Betsy's Office

They decided last week that they would no longer eat their very expensive grain-free canned food. That was fine: I just put out more of the very expensive dry grain-free food. And sure enough, Nelly decided tonight that the dry was bad and the canned was good. Betsy, who seems to have begun the dry trend, was extremely interested in the canned again, very suddenly.

There are two jigsaws today. They each took me between 66-70 minutes to complete. That was good. The stress at school is the worst I can remember, and the time doing the jigsaws was very relaxing. Both photos are the Picasso effect.

Escher Cats

Escher with my colors

Betsy finally came to bed last night! It's been at least two weeks since her adoption. She didn't stay in bed, however. As soon as I moved, she left. It will take time, but she will stay in the future. She loved the scratches she received and was rolling about and purring. You can see Nell in the back on her biscuit blanket. Lucy was at the top of the bed in her usual spot but out of sight of the camera.

I chose the Escher treatment for the photo because he is an artist and mathematician that I use nearly every year to illustrate tessellations to classes. His work, both artistically and mathematically, is very famous. The treatment of the photo definitely is not Escher, but it is very pleasing (to me).

My jigsaw puzzle last week only took me one hour to finish! I'm proud. Maybe it was luck; maybe I'm improving. This puzzle will be the real test of my skills.

New Old Toys

Nell peeks out of the tunnel.

I dragged out Nell's old tunnel that she disdained two years ago. Wouldn't touch it at all. But now? She's a different kitty and went bonkers for it. Every night after supper, she tries to get Betsy to play with her. From growls to play invitations! That's good—but Betsy?

Betsy is too tired.

Lucy said "No, thank you" to selfies this week. She was too busy supervising tunnel playtime.
