New Haven: An Oil Tanker

After Toni's moving funeral, I returned to Anna's house before Anna and Aaron returned and took Daisy for a walk. The day was bright and clear after an early snowfall the night before. Daisy and I needed to get outside and see what the birds and ocean were doing. I was delighted to see this oil tanker leaving the harbor. I'd never seen such a large ship there before. There is an oil storage area at the top of the harbor that I seldom photograph, even though it is picturesque in a weird sort of way. Daisy and I continued to walk the shoreline as the tanker left the harbor. We then walked home and cleaned up the house a bit.

I never was able to get the name of the ship.

I wish that I had met the people on the ship and knew where the tanker was going.

Pansies for the FOURTH Time

The pansy pot after Sophie Dog dug them up. Again.

Well, Sophie Dog dug up the pansies again. It happened during the weekend of our wedding, May 29. We thought Daisy Dog had done it. Or the chickens, or a raccoon or skunk. But after some detective work, we learned it was our dog. I was pretty upset. This was the third time she dug them up and we thought we had her tie far enough from the pansies to keep them safe. But we were wrong and Sophie Dog outwitted us.  The sad story of the pansies is told in these posts. I did get to the nursery for more pansies, but they only had six white ones, which we bought. Amelia replanted them and she also moved the dogs into the back of the house. Hopefully our pansies will survive the summer now!

Going Professional Soon

Aaron is a professional photographer. Even his family "snapshots" are stunning. He shot Daisy the Chihuahua in midair playing at home on the beach (click this link to see the photographs). My goal in life? To be as good as Aaron. So when we were in New Haven a couple of weeks ago, I forced everybody to play with Daisy while I lay on the floor to get photographs of her in midair that are as good as Aaron's. Everybody laughed at me! Even John! Well, Anna just rolled her eyes at me and muttered something like, "As if."

So I'm letting you be the judges. My photos are above this text. Aaron's are below. (Perhaps you couldn't even tell the difference in quality.) Whose photographs do you think are better?

A Weekend in Old Saybrook, Connecticut

The Girls

On a weekend in September, John, Amy and I drove down to Old Saybrook, Connecticut to spend a weekend with Anna, Aaron, Aaron's family, Marcia and Suzi (Andrew and Dan couldn't make it this time.) The weather was good half of the time. The food was great and the company wonderful. Here are my girls: Daisy is Anna and Aaron's tiny dog. Anna is taking a picture of me taking a picture of her. And behind Anna, Amy is taking off her shoes to wade in the surf. It never got warm enough to go swimming. I'm posting sunset photos of this weekend on my Photo A Day blog. In the near future there will be birds, scenery, and sea life posted.

New Haven: Bad Math: Doggie Miles

Yesterday I took little Daisy for a long walk on Sea Street and Water Street. We went on the piers and looked at boats. Well, I did. Daisy tried looking pitifully at me so that I would take her home.

I had been contemplating Text Savvy's latest challenge about tire sizes and odometer errors. And I suddenly realized that when I walk, Daisy seems to walk four times faster. So I wondered: are there such things as doggie miles? Like doggie years? I set out to prove that there are.

Last night we measured off five feet. It took me two steps to cover that. After a few dozen doggie treats and a lot of cajoling, Anna and I finally agreed that it took Daisy 16 steps (we counted all four feet that touched the ground, so her four feet each hit ground four times) to cover the five feet. Setting up the proportions was easy after all of that cajoling and dog step debating:

Finally:

16896 Daisy steps ÷ 2112 meeyauw steps = 8 doggie miles.
1 meeyauw mile = 8 Daisy doggie miles

This doggie mile calculation has to be adjusted for different strides for different dogs. If you have a big dog (or a crazed beagle) these calculations are invalid.

Meet Daisy, Anna (daughter) and Aaron's Chihuahua. Daisy loves to swim in salt water now that the three of them live on Long Island Sound in New Haven, Connecticut. Daisy plays in seaweed after her swim. Daisy gets a lot of baths now.
