Skywatch Friday: Storm Over a Linden Tree

Jody's daughter was doing a project on trees and spent some time in my woods finding different ashes, beech, and striped maple. She also wanted linden, but I only knew of one at the animal shelter in Orleans. But this linden is not native. It does, however, bring to mind all of the lime trees in the British novels that I love. 

There is also a storm coming in, which justifies this for Skywatch Friday.  😉

Oscar, Our New Kitten

About ten days ago, a kind stranger found Oscar the Kitten abandoned on the streets of Newport, Vermont and took him to Frontier Animal Society in Orleans. This was about the same time that our sweet Zorro died. I thought it would be a long time before I adopted another kitty. We were all sad for many days — both cats and humans. Then one day I dropped by to visit my daughter Amelia, who is the assistant manager of Frontier. There was Oscar, waiting for me. After talking to John, who didn't object, and Amy, who had taken me off of her "no-adopt" list when Zorro died, I returned two days later and brought Oscar home. The poor thing had been altered and given all of his shots the day before, so his third eyelids are showing in these photos. He weighed 3.6 lbs. (1.6 kg) and was 3 months old.

During the past week, Oscar's first week at his new forever home here, Buddy and Pansy did not like him. Possum was undecided. Possum tried to get close to Oscar to sniff him over so that she could decide whether to love him or hate him. But Oscar likes to bounce his paws off of the other cats, so Possum was thinking this kitten was not a good thing.

The neatest thing about Oscar — besides his brash personality? He's double-pawed on all four feet! I've never had a double pawed cat before. I wonder if he can catch mice  well with all those toes? At times, he seems to have problems catching and holding objects.

We love Oscar's crazy, googly eyes.

Andrew had to go to an American Psychological Association convention in San Diego awhile back and sent me this photo of the cat and dog room service menu in his hotel room. People! Why don't you just bring your own Iams and give the rest to a shelter? C'mon already! Frontier Animal Society in Orleans needs your support!

Jack the Amazing Jumping Dog

Daughter Amelia was walking Jack the Amazing Jumping Dog in the field when I arrived at Frontier Animal Society on Sunday. They came over to say hello. And here is Jack (above) enthusiastically greeting me. I've never seen a dog jump so high!

Amy gave Jack a command and he was able to stop his jumping and pose beautifully so that I could say hello.

I love Jack's response to my hello!

Jack couldn't contain himself and began jumping again. He is being re-trained by Amy, who is Frontier's dog trainer, so that his behaviors are acceptable for a new home. Good luck, Jack! Someone as full of life and love as you deserves your own family! (Love your boots, Jack!)

Cats on Tuesday: Frontier Animal Society

My daughter Amelia is one of the managers of Frontier Animal Society in Orleans County, Vermont. Amelia is a dog trainer and she evaluates and trains all of the dogs that come to the shelter so that they can be more easily adopted. It's quite a responsibility and I'm so proud of her important work. She is also my personal "vet" — she gives my cats their shots.

Sunday John and I drove north to visit our home up in Barton but I had forgotten that it was Amelia's shelter duty weekend. I stopped by to visit her there and got a couple photos. Amelia didn't want to disturb the cats in the cat room, so we visited Fancy in the shelter's kitchen.

Fancy was brought to the shelter as a stray. She hates dogs, most cats and most people. Here is Fancy's adoption page. But she greets Amelia every morning at the shelter. Fancy lives in the kitchen because she can open doors. She can't yet unlock human doors, though, so when there is no staff present, she is locked in the kitchen. If Fancy is allowed to roam the shelter at night, she goes into the cat room and lets the other cats out of their kennels. Fancy has some health problems and is looking for the perfect home. I hope her beauty and personality make her easily adoptable.

Lady is Groomed by Matt

Matt (a certified groomer) and Amelia (a certified trainer) volunteer at the Frontier Animal Society in Orleans, VT. Lady, the Shih Tzu mix featured here, was surrendered by her owner who bragged that a comb had never touched the dog. Which was unfortunate. The mats around Lady's mouth were so serious that it was difficult for the dog to eat. Matt could not use clippers on lady's face because of the mats.

Tears come to my eyes when I see how happy Lady is after her lovingly-done grooming.
