Happy Tuesday: A Whole Mouse

New Haven, Connecticut
September 12, 2022

Daughter Anna sent us this photo yesterday. It was taken on the pier in New Haven Harbor where she walks the devil dogs. It didn't move until she left.

I said that it was nice to see a mouse whole and not in parts.
🐭
I hope you had a Happy Tuesday!

Winter Weekends

We do other things in the winter besides cook and eat. The bird feeders require replenishing. Matt took these photos. Above you see the bird tree. I have added another thistle feeder sack because the redpolls are flocking by the dozens to them. Below you can see me, in my warm winter robe, leopard jammies that were a gift from my sister, and my boots, smearing all-natural, organic peanut butter on the bird tree. Today I put blobs of peanut butter on the tree instead of one huge smear. The chickadees and blue jays kept slipping off of the large area of peanut butter. Now they can safely peck away at it.
Amy spends her evenings knitting with Mouse Cat and Sophie Dog (below).

Who Ate The Shrew?

Amelia chased Matt and me out onto the porch with this grisly chewed up shrew corpse.
Who killed this silly shrew that came out from under the refrigerator?

Not Mousie — she was helping Amy knit warm winter socks.

I guess it wasn't Buddy, either.

And it wasn't Bad Boy Charlie.
Aren't these boys embarrassed by their winter weight?
They don't even go outside anymore.
The killer is revealed below.

Miss Sophie! She is the quickest and best mouser around.
I took this photo after Amy took the dead shrew from her.
She was sad about losing her kill.

Sophie has caught three shrews so far — one in the house and two out in the snow drifts (remember — shrews tunnel through the snow for safety from predators. But Sophie sniffs them out. See the previous post.) The cats have only caught two shrews in the basement. The Bad Boys didn't catch those. I know that because they never go into the basement. They sleep upstairs. They wake only to stumble to food and stumble back to bed.

Cats Tuesday: Mouse

I was outside on a nice day last week with Mouse and my new camera. I took over 100 photos of her! I managed to pare them down to these four!

Digital Photography Assignment: Portraits 2

Mouse
My second batch of portraits was of Mouse (the first was of Possum). I am learning a bit more about Elements, highlights, shadows and contrast adjustments. Once again, I am missing an ear (that was the most often heard suggestion). I find that I am going for the total expression and don't even notice the ears. I like the shots to be very tight. Maybe I should change and zoom out a bit? I like this one, perhaps because Mouse has such a beautiful face. I appreciate your gentle critiques and I listen to each one. Thank you so much!

Cats Tuesday: Winter Cats (and Dogs)

Buddy wakes up for about an hour or so a day to play with his scrunchy ball.

Scout does not like to sleep with any cat.

Charlie sleeps more than Buddy does.

Sophie (dog) and Mouse (cat) are still in love.

By the way, Sophie caught and killed a mouse on her daily walk in the woods today. The mouse died quickly and humanely, unlike when a cat catches a mouse.

Our Winter Life

We sleep a lot. A real lot.

We wake up grumpy.

Best friends play a bit too rough and cause bad feelings.

Such rudeness causes really bad feelings.

Buddy opens one eye to see what's going on.

Scout is woken from her sleep.

At the end of the day, Sophie wants to sleep under her warm blanket.

Cats Tuesday: Love

My beautiful Mousie Cat and the Crazy Sophie Dog are in love. This isn't just about kisses. This is about nuzzling, purrs, murmurs, sleeping together, and mutual grooming. Mousie's fur is a mess here because of the grooming that Sophie gave her. Mousie doesn't even mind. Sophie (as you can see) has never been happier. Here they are sunning and napping together in front of my bird feeder window on top of Scout's large kennel. Sophie doesn't really fit in the cat bed that she is sort of in and in which Mousie was sleeping when Sophie joined her.

Thank you for visiting.
