Goodbye, Zorro

Zorro died peacefully yesterday, June 9, as I sadly held him. I didn't want to be there because my heart was broken. Zorro had been sick for a week. His blood test confirmed thyroid disease but he was not tolerating the medication and it had to be stopped. He lost 30% of his weight in seven days and had stopped going outside. He was jaundiced. I decided that any more treatment would be distasteful for this brave guy, and we let him go.

We buried Zorro in the back garden near the huge lilac bush that he loved to nap under in the summer. We placed the cremains of his mother and brothers and sisters with him. He was the last remaining member of the family. All of the others had died at various ages of EGC. We planted a snowball bush with them to mark their graves. Zorro’s doctor told me that the average lifespan of a cat is 13 years. Zorro would have been 16 in August. It still was not enough time for him or me.  I have chosen several photographs of his life to share and remember Zorro with.

Buddy and Zorro Go To Bed - 6
Zorro never was the big cat in the house; Buddy was.
Zorro was groomed by Buddy daily.

I never realized how thin Zorro had gradually become until I looked at these photos again.
He was never a plump cat; he was lean and tough.

Zorro was a fierce hunter. Never birds, only rodents, although he did stalk turkeys and chickens. He always skinned his mice before he ate them — an odd habit, I always thought. His entire being required him to be outside, even in the winter. We always had a difficult time getting him inside the house after dark (because of coyotes), but he would eventually learn to return home at dusk and nap until dawn, when he would trot out the door with his tail high. When he lived in New Hampshire, Zorro's favorite prey was chipmunks. He would bring them home alive, and after praising Zorro's prowess to him, we would rescue and release the chipmunk.

Cats Tuesday: Still Winter!

We are still in the winter doldrums here. George Barton Cabot has been accepted by all cats except Buddy and Charlie. Their bickering is making me nuts. Above you see (left to right): Turnip, Zorro and George.

Cats Tuesday: Is George the World's Toughest Cat?

George Barton Cabot - 07 by you.
In July, my Zorro won third prize in the World's Hardest Cat Competition at Little Cat Diaries. The contest is on again and closes on February 22, so run quick and enter your toughest kitty! I won a copy of the book Under the Paw: Confessions of a Cat Man. I have no desire to win this year, but I will submit these photos of George Barton Cabot yawning. He looks ferocious but he's a sweetie. Zorro and I had our moment in the sun — now it's the turn of some other fortunate and tough cats! E-mail your photo of your tough guy or gal to underthepaw@tom-cox.com or leave a link to your photo at Little Cat Diaries. Don't delay! The deadline is February 22! (Tom & Janet Cox and Under the Paw are on Facebook, too. Follow them there.)

Who Ate The Shrew?

Amelia chased Matt and me out onto the porch with this grisly chewed up shrew corpse.
Who killed this silly shrew that came out from under the refrigerator?

Not Mousie — she was helping Amy knit warm winter socks.

I guess it wasn't Buddy, either.

And it wasn't Bad Boy Charlie.
Aren't these boys embarrassed by their winter weight?
They don't even go outside anymore.
The killer is revealed below.

Miss Sophie! She is the quickest and best mouser around.
I took this photo after Amy took the dead shrew from her.
She was sad about losing her kill.

Sophie has caught three shrews so far — one in the house and two out in the snow drifts (remember — shrews tunnel through the snow for safety from predators. But Sophie sniffs them out. See the previous post.) The cats have only caught two shrews in the basement. The Bad Boys didn't catch those. I know that because they never go into the basement. They sleep upstairs. They wake only to stumble to food and stumble back to bed.

George Naps on Not Cats on Tuesday

George takes a nap in the computer table cat bed. I've been sick for five days so I wasn't able to make the Cats on Tuesday post. I'm going back to work today and I may even be able to stay all day.

Cats Tuesday: George Loves Matt Best

Amelia's friend Matt moved in with us this summer. George moved in with us in May. George loved me so much . . . . until Matt came. Now I am second best, but only when Matt isn't around. As soon as he comes home, George runs to him, naps with him, kisses and head butts him. He even allowed Matt to hold him like you see here. You can see how George has gained weight. In fact, he's gaining a tummy now! He is extraordinarily clean and his fur is lush.

George has a few idiosyncrasies: he eats his kills; he will use a litter box but only in emergencies — he prefers to dig holes all over the front yard. He will go out in the rain and doesn't mind being soaked to his skin (although he has begun to show signs of sleeping through bad weather days lately!). He comes when he is called and when he wants in, he jumps on the railing outside and looks in the window. Every morning George goes out and sprays the brush on the perimeter of the house yards. He never sprays in the house. Buddy then goes outside and sprays where George sprays! Like Buddy, George loves to take walks in the woods with his people. His purr is a deep, mancatly rolling purr. And Mouse? Our scary, high-handed, dictatorial matriarch? She has almost accepted him!

George has become the perfect cat and we are glad he dropped in.

Cats Tuesday: Action Shots

I know I haven't been around for ages. But I'm back! And looking forward to visiting everybody again and getting caught up. Zorro and George are friends now and often play outside. Yesterday George surprised Zorro who was sleeping next to the woodpile. Off they took to the meadow on the hill and into the woods! The shots are not great, but they capture the joy that cats must feel when chasing each other with complete freedom.
