How To Make It All Go Away

Woodpile on April 9, 2011 (2 of 4).jpg
The woodpile on April 9, 2011

The weather on Saturday, April 9, was beautiful and warm. But we still had a deep snowpack on all but a few southern facing slopes. John, who truly dislikes snow, had had enough. I found him in the back dooryard silently dragging the hose out to the brook (in addition to the brooks in the field and orchard out back, there is another brook in the backyard). An electric wire came out of the brook and was running into the house. I asked him what was up. He said he was getting rid of the snow. I told him not to electrocute himself and went for my camera.

The electric cord ran to a big aquarium pump. John had taped the electrical connections to make sure he wouldn’t be electrocuted, and dumped the pump into the brook. The pump sucked up the water and spat it out of the hose and onto the snow in the yard.

John had also spent a lot of time this winter tossing wood ash onto the snowpack. The dark colored ash would absorb sunlight and melt the snow. That’s why these snow photos look the way they do. We had the dirtiest snow in the county. The ash was effective in reducing snow but not in getting rid of it.

John's snow reduction was very successful. By the end of the afternoon, half of the entire dooryard was free of snow. John’s tension was relieved and peace was restored to our home. The dooryard was very wet.

PS: It was another two weeks before all the snow  (except a two foot deep pile behind the woodpile and lots still in the woods) was clear. It  had melted naturally. I think.

The First Robin

First Robin of Spring (Turdus migratorius) (5 of 6).jpg
March 31, 2011

Every spring I note the day that I see my first robin. The day you see the first robin of spring is a lucky day in New England. It's an important harbinger of spring. But this was the latest that I had ever seen my first. As I write this, I can hear the snow plow go by. The season’s snow has not yet melted, the ponds and lakes are still frozen and we got another six inches of snow here yesterday on this part of the mountain. But it may reach 40°F this coming week. The sun might shine. There is always hope.

Snow, Oil, Dogs and Cellar Holes

On May 10, Ironman had the camera again and took photos of our oil delivery. We’ve never had to have a delivery in May, but it snowed the first two weeks of the month and we ran out of firewood. We should be set with oil now for a couple of years.

Then the 4 year old took the camera into the room that John is renovating and got this shot of the cellar hole. The boulder is part of the original 1900 stone foundation. It is a granite boulder that was quarried on Barton Mountain in our quarry.

These are some old farm implements that were tossed into the cellar hole. There were treasures and trash under the floor — some of it was over 100 years old.

Ironman’s self-portrait.

Cats on Tuesday: Buddy's First (Unsuccessful) Hunt

Here you see Buddy returning home from the woods, which are up that hill behind him. I had seen a small movement in the woods as I looked out the kitchen window on Sunday, our first warm day (45°F or 7°C). I grabbed the camera, ran outside, and called him to me for photos. He happily returned home.

Buddy is definitely in better humor now that he can get outside. Today he sat in the bird tree and was disappointed when the birds didn't present themselves to him for a snack. He then stalked a little red squirrel and scared all the squirrels away for the rest of the day. Not even the shrike can do that! But the squirrels probably remember that Buddy killed one of their brethren last summer.

The dead grass is called thatch.
Within a month it will be a beautiful lush green.

Buddy stomps around in his studly glory with his tail all fluffed out
and a new season of adventures begins.

Heads or Tails: Express? Not!

Our "first day of Spring" was Sunday and I spent hours gadding about in the sun with my camera. My neighbors here were also enjoying the sunshine. The cream colored horse, usually sparkling clean, dozed in the dirt. I remember the first time I saw her lying in the sun during my first spring in this house. Not knowing what horses do, I was certain that she had died. I was actually on my way to tell my neighbors that their horse had died when the pretty horse heard me and stood up. I shamefacedly, but happily, returned home. On days like that day, you'll get nowhere fast if you ride these horses!

Photo Hunters: I Spy Signs of Spring

Muddy paw (ignore the gesture; he's just a silly kitty) . . .

. . . which Buddy got by actually going outside and sitting in the mud in the sun.
