Photo Hunters: I Caught the Train

This past summer Wingnut and I tried, but never succeeded, to get photos of the train as it went through Barton. Finally, on November 11, I was driving on Rt 5 South on the Barton-Orleans Road as the train traveled north to Orleans. These are poor shots, but I want to put them up for Wingnut.

This is the Vermont Railway. The trains haul freight and passengers and have charter and scheduled tourist trains. The Vermont Railway site says the "Vermont Rail System is an affiliation of four Vermont-based shortlines: the Vermont Railway, the Green Mountain Railroad, the Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad, and the Washington County Railroad."

The train runs through Barton at least once a day. Wingnut and I see it when we are at the Crystal Lake beach (either at the state park or at the town park). The conductor always waves at the people at the beach and at the crossings.

The Vermont Railway has a lot of excursion rides that I have always wanted to go on (there are also wedding and birthday excursion trains). This next year I'm going to take an excursion. No one except Wingnut will go with me, so it's time to go alone and create some good memories and photographs even when he is not here. I love excursion train rides (but I do not like Amtrak rides at all).

  1. An excursion train ride sounds like fun! :) My humans once took a ride on the Wakefield steam train back in Canada. They said it was fun.

(My mom is usually the photographer, which is why there aren't more photos of us together.)

  2. I'd love an excursion train ride too. The only one that has been close, was the Copper Canyon train, but it's a scheduled train too. In fact we're trying to find one for our big wedding anniversary coming up.

  3. Hi Andrée, I am back and thanks a lot for hosting our Cats on Tuesday ! I just arrived yesterday evening from 30° (86F) to -2 (31 F) it's awful, lol ! Our holidays where just wonderful and as you have read we even had a hotel cat !
I am still with half heart in holidays and have to force myself to get back to real life !
I like riding in a train too, it's so nice to see the landscapes flying by I don't know Amtrack very well I think the trains here are mybe a little more "romantic".

  4. Oh, it sounds lovely indeed. I bet Wingnut will be happy.

I love trains though there's nothing here. Back in my country, it's poorly maintained. But I love going on train rides. Perhaps someday. :)

    Happy weekend! :)

  5. For me the train is what I use to commute to work. Perhaps that strips away the romance of the rails a little. That said there are a lot of wonderful steam railways in the UK. For some reason I have never gotten around to a trip on one. I really must do so.

    Have a great weekend!

  6. We really like train excursions, too. The last one we took was 5 years ago in Alaska, Skagway's White Pass & Yukon Route. The other really neat one is the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gage RR in Colorado. We've done that one twice.

Cog railroads are pretty neat, too. We took the one up Pike's Peak. One day we'd like to take the one up Mt. Washington. We've been to the top twice by car.

Thanks for visiting my photo blog so many times.

  7. That's a great post and such good captures of the train. I hope you do go on an excursion on the train and take lots of pictures. Sounds like a great time. I haven't been on an excursion train in ages but I loved it. Maybe it's time for me to do it again soon too.

  13. I stopped using Mr. Linky since I leave comments anyway...it helps save me some blog commenting time...

I LOVE each and every ONE of these photos. But, I love trains. I especially like to hear the 'lonesome' sound of a train whistle in the distant darkness at night...there's just something about it that makes me feel so small in the world!!

Thank you so much for the wonderful kind words in my comments!!!

  15. Good shots with a sense of motion - well done. I love steam trains, but I'm not keen on modern British or Irish trains as they're purely for transport and lack character (for me, anyway)

  18. I love trains (too) -- even some of the Amtrak ones; or, at least, routes. One train ride that I would like to recommend is from Denver to Salt Lake City. Going through the Rockies makes for a seriously scenic ride. OTOH, wouldn't recommend going from Salt Lake City to L.A. Unfortunately, not only did I take it but I actually did it as part of a very long Denver to L.A. ride!

  23. Maybe having that trip in that train would be a good experience. It would be fun, I'm guessing, and you get to see a lot of great scenery.

  24. I always thought that traveling by train would be fun, although I have never done so. What great photos of the train. One usually never gets that close to it to get photos. Have a good weekend and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  28. I love riding on trains which is very rare since I don't have a train route near me. But in Europe I find it very exciting to go on a train. So different from going on the plane which is sterile in comparison.

  30. I LOVE your train pictures.
Trains are fascinating. At least I think that.

    Thanks for sharing.

PS. Last Sunday I saw the remains of the old train tracks out to Key West.. I've also seen the tracks from what was at that time main connection, the Railway, between Santiago de Chile and Argentine

  33. If there is a rail system, why can't my daughter take the train from Boston to St. Albans? ;) I love trains, too.

  34. When my dad worked on the railroad I went on a few train ride but I never been on am trak but if I was travailing any where I would consider taking the train all I hear about air line and air port is enough to drive one insane.
But an excursion ride sound like fun.

  39. This was too neat. My son is obsessed with trains and is very jealous that growing up I stayed often at my grandmother's house by the tracks-=-I would wave to the trains all the time. Very fun.

  40. Sadly to say, I have never on board a train before.
