We have been watching this hornet nest grow and shrink and grow again all this summer. The hornets were re-building this morning so I put this together to illustrate the nest and the hornet. The barn has many old and new nests. An interesting fact: these hornets are black and white versions of yellow jackets. They are also called whitefaced hornets. I don't like hornets at all. Ours are horrible and they have black and orange bodies and long orange legs that hang down when they fly. I've been stung just below my eye when one attacked me for being in the wrong place (by the back door, if you please). We had the nest destroyed.
ReplyDeleteWe've been coexisting peaceably with a hornet's nest in the overhang over the front door for 14 years! My husband thinks I'm insane, and he keeps saying that he'll get rid of the thing, but he never has. Leave them alone and they'll leave you alone. (This from the most allergic woman on earth...)
