Sunday: we went looking for peregrine falcons on the cliffs of Mount Pisgah and then drove to Long Pond to find some loons. We found nothing except beauty. Ice-out has not occurred on Long Pond yet.

What a wonderful weekend! After school Friday I made brownies for the movies at the library. D had told me it would be Harold and Maude and it was. Fifteen people attended. I didn't cut the brownies until after the movie because I had made them so badly this time. At home later, I bought Tea for the Tillerman from the iTunes store: I just can't get enough of that music.
On the way home, there was a female moose diagonally across the road from the house! I braked but she was just standing there watching the world.
Saturday was cold, drizzly and damp. I wanted to get the cats' annual flea treatment but bought the wrong one and I drove me back and forth from Amy and the vet getting the right one. I meandered over to the North Troy crossing to the Owl's Head Bakery for lunch in Mansonville, Que. Customs were no problem this time. In fact, the Canadian customs officer gave me directions to the bakery. On the American side when I returned, I saw the Guantanamo-type holding cages that the Americans have built at the new customs building. Four large chain link cages with barbed wire at the top. They are obviously built to hold people. It is a scar on our nation.
I had promised A's mom that I would be at the premiere of her son's film Green Mountain Shuffle at the Barton Memorial Building, so I drove back home just in time for that:
Award-winning author Michael T. Hahn's first movie is an offbeat love story set in the gorgeous mountains of Vermont. Starring Heather Fitch, Adam Desautels and Derek Campbell, and featuring music by Michael Hahn Band, Green Mountain Shuffle is an unforgettable tale of passion deceit and redemption.A's mother, father and grandfather sat in front of us. M and her husband D sat behind me. Roger was the host and Michael Hahn introduced the film. A's mom had assured me there would be no risque scenes in the movie but there were! I don't know how she (or A's grandmother!) sat through that but they were very composed. I had a wonderful time with welcoming friends and great conversations.
Then on to the Glover store for food for supper and to Evansville for gas and a movie (A Prairie Home Companion). The day was unplanned and so pleasant! Unfortunately I didn't take my camera but I am sure I will return to the bakery and restaurants in the Eastern Townships. Jim has given me permission to photograph the Glover store. I must do that as soon as possible.
The three common mergansers that appeared Thursday are still here: 2 males and 1 female.

Buddy and I went out to my woods last week to see how everything was doing after the winter. It's doing great! Some more trees came down in heavy snow, and I found another hollow tree nest and undefined tracks. The brooks were running high and were beautiful. Buddy had great fun going up and down trees and I had great fun with the camera. Hiking is a new adventure with Buddy! I made a short little video of Buddy and one brook that you may watch here if you like. I will be visiting each of you late tonight after class. Thank you for stopping by today and thank you for your encouragement while I was sick last week!

Do Canadian geese return to the same nesting area every year? Last year was the first time Canadian geese nested here. As soon as the babies could move, the family left and summered at Crystal Lake State Park down the road. Now they (or another pair) have returned.
I need a Cannon Rebel XTi and lenses and bags and stuff!
Go to Canadian Geese flickr set for more photos of this pair.
This morning these five does and yearlings wandered by the house and went across the road into the field. Can you imagine their happiness today in the warmth after several severe storms this spring? They blend in well with the winter thatch. In the summer the grasses in the field are tall enough to completely hide all but the biggest bucks. If you would like you can see the other photos in my flickr set Whitetail Deer.
_/\_/\_The Vermont Senate this morning approved by a 16-9 margin a resolution calling on the U.S. House to launch impeachment proceedings of Pres. George W. Bush and Vice Pres. Dick Cheney. The Vermont Senate is the first state legislative body in the country to call on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings. Impeachment resolutions are currently active in Hawaii, Missouri, New Jersey, and Washington. A measure in New Mexico was quashed earlier this year.
The move comes just days after nearly 150 people from around Vermont converged on Montpelier to urge lawmakers to pass such a resolution out of the House and Senate. The emotionally-charged, 40-minute meeting left backers hopeful that something could happen this session.
Today's resolution was introduced by Senate Pres. Pro Tem Peter Shumlin, D-Windham, and Sen. Jeannette White, D-Windham. The process began last night when Senate Majority Leader Dick McCormick, D-Windsor, introduced a resolution. However, his resolution did not include Cheney. The resolution by Shumlin and White did include Cheney.
The vote took place early in the morning and was over in less than a half hour.
Buddy Cat and I went out to the woods this evening to see how everything is doing. It's doing great! Some more trees came down in heavy snow, and I found another hollow tree nest and undefined tracks. Buddy had great fun going up and down trees and I had great fun with the camera.
Please visit my flickr set Spring Thaw!. There are 25 photos that I took on the same cat walk with Buddy.

GCalDaemon is a cross-platform, Java-based server that syncs your Google Calendar data locally and makes it available to applications like Sunbird (Thunderbird with Lightning), Rainlendar and iCal.Apparently this app does way more than Spanning Sync. I will be more and more enmeshed with Google, which disturbs me for several reasons. But my calendars will now work smoothly and I will be happy about that. Nobody needs Spanning Sync now. I don't even need OS 10.5 ($129.00) anymore.
This movie is a bit better than the VINS raptor movie below. More great memories of a wonderful day.

On my wonderful date on April 7, we went to VINS in Quechee and saw these raptors that had been injured and were being treated so that they could then be released. The movie is not good but it holds many great memories.

Remember my all-day-long date on April 7? I made this video when we went to Quechee.

Apple StatementThe following quote is from an e-mail to me from an Apple retailer in Vermont in response to my question about iPhones not being available in Vermont (18Jan07):
iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones. [Apr 12, 2007]
If you have a cell phone and a local 802 # you can go to Boston or another place where Cingular sells service, get the iPhone and Cingular service and because of all the rollover laws keep your VT phone number...
Also Gov. Douglas has a plan to make more wireless and cell service available in VT so this may change.
