Hydroelectric Power in Quechee
Electric turbine at Simon Pearce that generates electricity from the power of the Ottauquechee River.
Electrical control panel. Simon Pearce sells power to the grid when they don't use what they generate.
Above: the intake diversion and screen system at the place where the water comes into the turbine. The grate is angled to lift out branches and debris from the river. The debris is deposited behind the trash rack (the grate). The wall out in front of the trash rack is low down close to the water to prevent water fowl from getting into the mechanism. Below: fish were battling the current of the intake because the bugs they like to eat were drawn in by the current.

A Visit From Andrew & Dan
Andrew & Dan came from Washington, DC to visit all of us on the weekend of June 13th. We met at King Arthur Flour in Norwich, Vermont on Sunday and then wandered over to Quechee Gorge and Quechee Village for some sight seeing. The Simon Pearce store and restaurant are on the river and the falls. Dan, Amelia and Matt are on the balcony over the falls in the photo above.A plaque in the building says, "This building is what remains of a brick structure built about 150 years ago. Woolen cloth manufacture was carried out here off and on until 1951. This mill is believed to have been the largest US producer of fine soft wool flannel for baby clothes. In the years following 1951, the building fell into disrepair until Quechee Lakes started its village renovations several years ago. John Downers Mill has been the focal point of those renovations, which included rebuilding a covered bridge, restoration of the J. C. Parker house, Tinkham house, Barron and Burtch houses, the Gage house, Marshland Farm, a church building and others."
The covered bridge into the village is a "Quechee Lakes Development Corp., 1970 Steel Stringer, 90', spanning Ottauquechee River on Waterman Hill Road in Quechee village. Not an historic bridge, but worthy of mention due to its size, design and prominence as the principal entry to the village from Route 4."
The falls power the Simon Pearce store and are a beautiful view.
I miss seeing Amelia and Matt every day. They are in the Vermont house.I never did get a photo of Andrew on this day. Very odd.
But Dan, Amelia, John and Matt can be seen in the Quechee Village Set.

Possum, Charlie & Zorro ♡ NH (but not Turnip & Pansy)
For the first time in her life, Possum (above) asked to go outside. And I let her go. She is in heaven here in New Hampshire in the gardens. She has taken to John quickly and had an easy transition. I think it is mostly because there are no dogs here to worry her. And the Bad Boys (Buddy and Charlie) are not worrying her because they are busy exploring their new world.
Charlie is in love with John. He sleeps with him, listens to him and chews on his fingers (it took Charlie two years to have a relationship like that with me). He has no problems living here. Charlie is killing. John said there have been a few headless mice around his truck. That is Charlie's signature kill — if he doesn't eat the entire mouse, he eats the head. Or simply chews the heads off. He also leaves the bodies about the car of the person he loves.
Zorro — a skittish cat in Vermont because of those dogs. He is relaxing daily now, conversing and interacting well with John and me. He comes and goes as he pleases. In the photo above he was chatting away with John in the garden. While there were, of course, chipmunks in Vermont, they were not on my land. We never saw them. But they are plentiful here. I see them standing on their haunches in the gardens when I let the cats out in the morning, or scurrying under rocks around the house. The cats are fascinated by them and I expect to see a couple of dead ones soon. The chipmunks set up a loud alarm whenever the cats are let out.
Turnip and Pansy are having a difficult time. Turnip came down with an eye infection the week before we moved. It has gotten worse here because of the stress. I debated bringing him until he recovered, but I realized that the stress of being left behind without his brother, Zorro, would be as bad as moving him. He has explored the house once but is mostly sleeping and is gradually getting better.Pansy is an enigma. She is disabled with many birth defects but is stealthily moving about the house. She doesn't seem to have lost weight and is not growling or crying. Hopefully she and Turnip will integrate more as time goes on.

Buddy ♡ NH
Tomorrow will mark one week that the cats moved to New Hampshire with me. On Saturday, June 13, less than 12 hours after the cats' move to New Hampshire, I let Buddy outside. I never isolated Buddy in his new home (mostly because he is such a grump with other cats), but gave him total freedom inside and let him out days before it is recommended. He goes outside regularly now. The birds and chipmunks (a new species for the cats) are hollering at him all the time now. Buddy already has a bad rep.But Buddy ♡ NH.

Butterworks Farm Field Trip
We took a class field trip to Butterworks Farm in Westfield, Vermont. Butterworks is a major producer and supplier of organic yogurt in Vermont. Our visit was unique. Anne Lazor gave us a Butterworks Farm Corn Bread Recipe and a map of the farm. Our task was to find the natural ingredients for the corn bread on the farm in a scavenger hunt. Anne accompanied us and educated us along the way, creating a very special day.

Lady is Groomed by Matt
Matt (a certified groomer) and Amelia (a certified trainer) volunteer at the Frontier Animal Society in Orleans, VT. Lady, the Shih Tzu mix featured here, was surrendered by her owner who bragged that a comb had never touched the dog. Which was unfortunate. The mats around Lady's mouth were so serious that it was difficult for the dog to eat. Matt could not use clippers on lady's face because of the mats.
Tears come to my eyes when I see how happy Lady is after her lovingly-done grooming.

Luna Moth
Actias luna
The moth's eye is dark puple in the patch of dark fur behind the antenna. The yellow fur above the antenna is muscle to support the large wings. Wikipedia's entry for this moth:Adults . . . emerge from their cocoons in the morning. Their wings are very small when they first emerge and they must enlarge them by pumping bodily fluids through them. During this time, their wings will be soft and they must climb somewhere safe to wait for their wings to harden before they can fly away. This process takes about 2 hours to complete. The Luna moth has a wingspan of between 8–11.5 cm (3-4.5 in) with long, tapering hindwings, which have eyespots on them in order to confuse potential predators. Although rarely seen due to their very brief (1 week) adult lives, Luna moths are considered common. As with all Saturniidae, the adults do not eat or have mouths. Blackwater Dam
I am learning about the sights and history of New Hampshire as John and I tour the area. He took me to the Blackwater Dam in Webster last weekend. The Blackwater River flows across the road from our house and it is an unremarkable river here as it flows through the flats, creating a small wetland. I have not even had a chance to explore across the road yet. The brook that flows through our land and creates our three ponds drains into the Blackwater. Downstream the Blackwater flows through beautiful forests and huge erratics and finally arrives in Webster, where it is dammed. The entire flood plain around the dam is federally managed land. Below the dam is a park where we explored and found Indian Cucumber, Partridge berries, cinnamon ferns, silvery cinquefoil and sand blackberries. The road to the actual bottom of the dam was closed, so we will be returning to view that.

meeyauw Has Moved To New Hampshire
Yes, I have actually moved — and am still moving because in seven years in Barton I have accumulated a lot of stuff. I am now in central New Hampshire in a small town in the Lakes Region. Today was officially my first day of residence here, even though I have been blogging from here for months now. The cats moved down here today, so now this truly is home. I am keeping the Vermont house for now but its future is uncertain. The kids are using it and caring for it without me. The kids have kept George and Mousie Cats, so I only have six cats here.
I have left a home in Vermont that I thought was my dream home, that I thought I would never leave. But I learned this year that life can change quickly in a positive direction. I am with my love in New Hampshire and will be here as long as we live. In future posts I will relate the story of how we met.It is beautiful here. There are apple trees, mountains, and granite glacial erratics strewn everywhere. The wildlife — just as I had in Vermont — is abundant. The flowers are different because it is a warmer climate. It is fun to learn about another New England state that I don't know much about. The first photo above is of a Pink Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium acaule) on our land — the New Hampshire State Wildflower. We have ponds for swimming and for wildlife on the land. And we have gardens for vegetables and flowers. Gardens are new to me.
I don't like the mosquitoes here! John says, as they say in Maine, that they are the state bird of New Hampshire. I'm beginning to believe him! And there is poison ivy on the roadsides. John meticulously eradicates it on the land we live on. (As you can see, John can handle poison ivy with his bare hands without ever getting a rash.) But winters are shorter and there are more professional and social opportunities here. I'm finding it a wonderful place to live.Life is quiet, peaceful and shared now. I never thought this would happen to me again. I have many new adventures ahead of me.
