Fire and Ice

From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice

Friday Fractal: Nautilus
This is my fractal flame creation in Apophysis 2.09 (the version for Windows 7 which renders hours faster than version 2.02). I used a tutorial that I found. After hours of manipulation, I was satisfied with this helix (a type of space curve, i.e. a smooth curve in three-dimensional space. It is characterised by the fact that the tangent line at any point makes a constant angle with a fixed line called the axis Source: Wikipedia).If you use Apophysis, it will serve you well to use the tutorials that are available. Fran's Tutorial is great for version 2.02 and offers a lot of basic information.
Below is my very first Apophysis (2.02) flame. I call it Laughing Penguin.
I found a series of six Arthur C. Clarke videos about fractals, The Color of Infinity, on YouTube. This week I'll feature the first 9 minute video:I will no longer link to the Macintosh OS X fractal flame software, Oxidizer. Friday Fractal: Pink Dragon Spewing Pink Flame
I am so tired! Four days of taking classes and teaching a class. Ordinarily that would be fine except that I had to drive hundreds of miles for these classes. But I completed them all successfully. Now I have a rainy day off — to watch taped soaps, play with photos, make brownies for tonight's anime movie at the library and read. Today I changed the exposure values on copies of the original flames that I created in Oxidizer, imported the exposures to Photomatix and created HDR images. This image isn't any better or worse than the original, so I doubt I will play like this again.Click the tag below to view creations of other participants!

Friday Fractal: Fractal Crop Circles and ∏
Easy as pi: Astrophysicist solves riddle of Britain's most complex crop circle:
Carved out in a barley field, this 150 ft wide pattern is said to be a pictorial representation of the first ten digits of Pi, one of the most fundamental symbols in mathematics.
The image is an example of what is known as a fractal, or geometric pattern.
Fractals have been a staple of crop circle designs for many years, the most well known being the Mandelbrot Set or the Julia Set, which appeared 12 years ago in Avebury Trusloe, Wiltshire.
Lucy Pringle, a renowned researcher of crop formations, has the largest database in the world on the phenomenon.
She said yesterday: 'This is an astounding development - it is a seminal event.'

Friday Fractal: Cookies and Earrings
I'm not feeling that well — something with my head, ears and throat. I am now deaf, too. I had to leave our district inservice day for teachers and I feel left out and am pouting. So instead of posting one of my own fractal flames, I'm posting these two posts from Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories. Above you see Sierpinski cookies. Below you see Sierpinski earrings. Friday Fractal: Torus with Ribbons
There has been an update to Oxidizer to version 0.5. I've tried it and don't like it. The methods of scaling the images are so different and complicated that I didn't want to relearn everything. But I have kept it so that if there ever comes a day that I have nothing to do, I may play with it. As before, there is no documentation with the software. And as before, it is just as difficult to find this version again on the internets. So here is a link for you to poke around in if you want to try to use version 0.5. Friday Fractal: My Genome Project
Genomes are flames that have not been bred or changed in anyway. If you click on the images, you can view them full size in a new window. The detail in them is fascinating. The genomes come directly from the Oxidizer gene pool. I enlarged them and improved the quality of the render and posted them here. You can use genomes to create new flames.
