Tripod Interruption
In reverse chronological order: above: Canon XSi manual settings, f10, 1/400 sec
I finally got a very good tripod for the Canon! It was well worth the cost. Especially considering that I broke the Kodak tripod with the Canon because the camera was too heavy for it. So one expensive tripod makes up for many cheap Kodak tripods.
I have no idea what setting the above photo is on but I like the effect.I haven't completed blogging about New Haven or Vermont but I have to interrupt the flow: I have been obsessed with getting good moon photos again. As good as I got with the Kodak. I can't do that well with the Canon because the Kodak had optical zoom. I need a long lens for the Canon to get close. I need at least 400mm and hopefully can get 800mm lens soon. But you can see that as I practiced and read, I got better and better. However, you will experience it as worse and worse because blogs go backward through time.

Craftsbury, Vermont Is a Good Place to Retire in New England - WSJ.comThis is an excellent article about the NEK from a former Long Island native who has retired in the Kingdom. I agree with the statement that "Single people, especially, complain of isolation." I truly enjoy being alone but the winters, even for me, could be excruciatingly long. I have often joked that Vermont's first in the nation civil union law (which has been replaced by a marriage equity law) was not about politics. It was about Vermonter's concern that nobody be alone in the winter.
I often drove through snowstorms at night for long hours where there were no cars and where nobody lived. There were just miles and miles of forest with an occasional wolf walking down the road in the storm. I remember worrying that if I went into a ditch it could be a long time before I was ever found. The women at school began to check in on me in the winter to make sure I was OK, and I appreciated that. They said everybody needs to have somebody worry that they are safe at night.
I kept busy during storms with photography, observing the wildlife, reading and music. The Barton community is marvelous. The library is an important part of life there, as is the church.
I have wonderful memories of those days. If you are alone in the Kingdom, reach out and let others know.

Signs of Spring
In the back of the Barton house, the melting snowpack reveals shrew tunnels under the thatch. I have never seen this many. I think it has been a dearth of cats to keep them under control. This is out the back bathroom door. There are also mole tunnels everywhere, which is as I want.
My two rhubarb patches are reviving. This is exciting because it's the first fruit of the year. These are some species of Canadian rhubarb that thrives in the cold climate and short season. In the past, Wingnut and I have observed and recorded many ant aphid farms on the rhubarb (here and here) ._/\_/\_
Winter Damage
Of course, the mailbox was plowed. But John's fixed it for now (not seen here).
The snow brought down the shed on the back of the barn. The underground water springs have done their damage and grown the willows. This whole area is going to be excavated, drained and rebuilt. I can't wait!
My clothesline! I love a clothesline and it needs piles of work before it can be used again.All in all, the winter wasn't that hard on the house. I can't wait for the land to green up in another month.

From Sheffield Heights to New Hampshire
Somewhere at the top of Sheffield Heights (the highest point on I-91), traveling south.The Heights has notoriously bad weather winter or summer. It was snowing everywhere north of this point.
Approaching Lyndonville at mile 134 traveling south. Barton is north somewhere around mile 155. The snow is gone and the clouds are higher. Wikipedia has a great article about the mile markers and exits on the entire route of I-91 from New Haven to Canada.
Further south, it is dryer.
Somewhere after Barnet the road looks even better.
I love ribbon of highway winding around the mountains in Vermont.
