Rock Climbing in Orleans

The Outdoors Club from Lake Region High School was learning how to climb rocks on a road cut in Orleans, Vermont at the intersection of Routes 5 and 58 on September 25, 2007. I was given permission to photograph and I was very careful to not get any faces. The entire set of photos can be seen in my web gallery here or in my Flickr set here.

Dogs on Thursday: Bruno the Corn Maze Dog

Bruno is owned by the Corn Maze farmer. He is a corn-cob loving chocolate lab. He rips cornstalks out of the maze, shakes the cobs free, and then runs like a crazed chocolate lab with his corn. He eats several ears of corn a day! I caught him in this photo looking guilty after ripping up some cornstalks.

Heads or Tails: Haystack Mountain, Westmore, Vermont

Haystack Mountain rises above Long Pond in Westmore, Vermont (8 miles from my house) on the August morning that I went to watch the loons.

Town of Barton, Vermont (Google Earth Challenge)

Here is part of Barton Township with the village of Barton. The village of Orleans is to the north. You can open each image to view them large in a new window. Each was grabbed from Google Earth with Skitch. I also used Skitch to annotate the second image. (Mac only, 4 beta invitations left!)

I give you a Google Earth Challenge: where do you live, work or play? I would enjoy seeing your Google Earth images. You can annotate them or not. I have no idea what Windows software you would use to do what Skitch does. Please leave your link to the Challenge here in the comments! Be sure to grab the button above!

Wingnut Jumps!

Turn up the volume and watch Wingnut jump 30 feet (9.144 meters)! Wingnut jumped for four hours this morning. I did not edit the length of each segment, so unless you are Wingnut's mom, aunt or uncle you may think this too long (3'55). That's OK. Enjoy the music!

Wingut's Toad

Wingnut found a toad out back this afternoon.
The toad is not pleased.

This photo shows how small the toad was in Wingnut's 11 year old hand.

Wingnut wanted a shot of the pattern on the toad's back.
Wingnut tells me this is a toad because of the bumps on its back.
Frogs do not have bumps.

I turned around and saw our doe standing in the road watching us.
She left the road as soon as I picked up the camera.

We Can Have Swimming Lessons, Please?

Shadow Lake, Glover

So far it has been a cold and wet summer. Swimming lessons began this week. We are going to Shadow Lake this year because Willoughby Lake is so cold. But with temperatures in the fifties and sixties (10°C - 21°C) most days, nobody has felt much like swimming. Right now it is 52°F (11°C) and pouring rain with thunder. These photos were taken on the only two days this week that we have had lessons. The other days were cancelled because of thunder. We both miss the lessons. I look forward to reading under the trees on the beach during Wingnut's swimming lesson.

Orleans Teenager Accused Of High-Speed Flight

Orleans Teenager Accused Of High-Speed Flight

On Friday I twittered about this high speed chase that went by the house. A red car closely followed by an unmarked state car, then by two state troopers, then a sheriff, then more troopers. Later, another trooper raced by but turned around down near my neighbors and raced back to Westmore.

At Currier's that afternoon we learned that it was "only a kid." Here are the details.

Photo Hunters: Fake

Currier's Market in Glover, Vermont is full of "fake" animals. They were once real but they all visited the taxidermist.

If you like, you can view all 32 images from this store in the Currier's Market set on Flickr.

Thank you for visiting. I hope you all are having a good summer!

Howard Frank Mosher in Newport

Goodrich Memorial Library

Howard Frank Mosher, author of Marie Blythe, appeared at the Woodknot Bookstore in Newport on Friday, June 29. As soon as I heard of his appearance, Wingnut and I ran up there. I bought his new book, On Kingdom Mountain, and he signed it.

Orleans County Courthouse

Mr. Mosher and his wife both know D and M from school. He didn't remember me from last May when he signed Marie Blythe for me. But he repeated the story of Marie as being true and she is still alive in Brownington.

Orleans District Courthouse

He had returned the night before from a ten bookstore tour in Massachusetts and the next day he was leaving for a one hundred city tour. He didn't want to go because the weather in Vermont is the most perfect that you can find anywhere in the world in the winter.

View of Lake Memphremagog from the District Court

Wingnut and I took the time to take photos in Newport for this post. The courthouses are the scene of Midwives by Chris Bohjalian, an Oprah Book. The view of Lake Memphremagog from the courthouse is mentioned in one scene.

A Beautiful Day

Long Pond, Westmore, Vermont

Sunday: we went looking for peregrine falcons on the cliffs of Mount Pisgah and then drove to Long Pond to find some loons. We found nothing except beauty. Ice-out has not occurred on Long Pond yet.
