Turnip, Too

I began writing this post one week ago and never completed it. I never had the heart and I still don't. Turnip has died. He was hit by a car last week. Thankfully (again), it was quick and he was beautiful in death. John has buried him in the garden. Turnip was always so timid and fearful that I never ever thought he would make it all the way down to the road. Yet he did.

Turnip (named by Amelia because she "always wanted a cat named Turnip") was one of Matilda's babies, born in August, 1996 in Hartford, Connecticut. He was almost 13 years old. He was such a sweetie that he never fought with any other cat. He was totally submissive yet was very caring towards the other cats, and was always cuddling and washing the others. Zorro, Turnip's brother, is now the only survivor of Matilda's family.

Here is a slideshow of Turnip's life

Turnip's loss has been very difficult for all of us this week
but time heals.

  4. We are so very sorry for your loss. Our woofie cousin was killed by a car last week, so we know this is very hard for you. But we are so glad you found the courage to reach out to others to speak about Turnip. That, too, is part of the grieving process.

  13. We are purrin' fur your heart to feel better and are feelin' really bad that poor Turnip had to leave this world too early. Sometimes it is betters to keep the kitties in the house whether they like it or not. It is a furry skeery place in the biggie world and there are many things that can kill kitties.

  17. I am so sorry to read about this kitty's death. As always, when we allow cats outside their lives are very short. You are most likely going to delete my message but there is no such thing as a beautiful death when you are young and you have been hit by a car for no other reason than being let out the door.

  18. No, I shall publish it. Dissent is no sin. I know how much you care and thank you for your condolences. I used to keep all of my cats inside the house. But living in the country, far far from a road, I was sure they were safe. But as my father always told me, all it takes is one car. Turnip was such a timid cat that I never thought he would walk so far from home. But he did. I have no excuses for allowing him to roam. It was a conscious choice on my part and I accept responsibility.
